Trespasser Sparks Chaos at London Waterloo

Dangerous Stunt Causes £1.2M Chaos

A trespasser who triggered nearly 1,000 train cancellations and delays at London Waterloo has been slammed with an 18-month prison sentence. Ryan Seymour, 41, shook the South West Main Line on August 19, 2024, by running across live tracks at New Malden, south-west London – a crucial route linking Waterloo to Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, and Wiltshire.

During a police chase, Seymour dashed across four electrified tracks, forcing a train driver to slam the brakes at 75mph. Network Rail had to cut power to avoid electrocution risks, stranding four trains and crippling the South Western Railway (SWR) network for hours.

Massive Disruption and Cost

  • 921 train services hit
  • 358 trains cancelled outright
  • 81 services partially cancelled
  • 13,178 minutes of delays – that’s nine full days lost
  • Overcrowding measures at Waterloo enforced
  • Total bill to taxpayers: a whopping £1.2 million

With trains and crews out of place, delays snowballed well into the next morning, grinding the entire SWR network to a halt.

Manhunt Ends with Court Justice

Seymour dodged police for days before the Metropolitan Police finally nabbed him. On February 4, 2025, at Kingston Crown Court, he confessed to reckless public nuisance, dangerous driving, and driving without a licence or insurance.

Judges handed down eight months for trespassing on railway property and 10 months for dangerous driving, to run consecutively. That’s 18 months behind bars for bringing chaos to millions of commuters.

Authority Warns Against Railway Trespass

“This prosecution shows the severe consequences of trespassing. Seymour was lucky to escape unharmed,” said Tom Desmond, Network Rail Operations Director.

“Trespassing on railway tracks is extremely dangerous. We hope this sentence warns others,” added Dan O’Riordan, Head of Security for SWR.

“His reckless actions caused misery across south-west London. We will always act firmly against such behaviour,” stated Detective Sergeant Tim Deans, Metropolitan Police.

Rail officials remind the public: the third rail carries lethal voltage, and trains roar through at nearly 100mph. Trespassing isn’t just illegal – it’s deadly.

If you spot suspicious activity near railway lines, report it immediately to keep everyone safe.
