Shoplifter Jailed After Co-Op Crime Spree Hits Portsmouth
Simon Collins, 51, has been slapped with six months behind bars for a relentless shoplifting spree across Co-Op stores in Portsmouth. He pleaded guilty to 28 charges during his court hearing at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on November 23.
Raid Across 10 Stores Nets Nearly £2K in Stolen Goods
Between September 5 and October 24, Collins targeted ten Co-Op outlets throughout Portsmouth, including branches on Great Southsea Street, Twyford Avenue, and Fawcett Road. The pilfered items—mostly food—totalled a hefty £1,925 in value.
Police Crackdown Targets Repeat Offenders
Shoplifting has been a growing headache for local businesses, prompting police to take a hard line—especially against repeat offenders and cases involving violence. A dedicated city centre unit now works closely with firms like Co-Op to root out criminals.
Chief Inspector Paul Markham said, “Business owners and shop staff should not have to face criminal behaviour. We’ve worked closely with the Co-Op, using CCTV and witness statements to secure this outcome. Let this be a clear warning: keep stealing, and you’ll end up in court.”
Protecting Shops: Police Safety Tips
- Fit staff with panic alarms to raise the alarm quickly.
- Keep CCTV cameras in tip-top condition with annual servicing and good coverage.
- Encourage staff to report any suspicious activity immediately, with details like date, time, and descriptions.
