Burglar Who Terrorised Pensioner Jailed for Seven Years

Darren John Lane, 46, landed behind bars after a chilling double attack on an elderly man in Bournemouth. The no fixed abode criminal was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Thursday 4 January 2024.

Poses as Charity Worker to Steal Cash

On 30 November 2023, Lane showed up at the victim’s Boscombe home, claiming he represented the landlord and a local charity. He convinced the man in his 70s to let him in.

Once inside, Lane manipulated the pensioner, saying he needed £40 to stop local drug users bothering him. When the victim produced the cash, Lane snatched the envelope – which fell, spilling the money – before making a swift getaway.

Returns to Break-In and Attack Victim

Less than two weeks later, on 16 December 2023, Lane struck again. Using a ladder nearby, he climbed through the man’s bedroom window while the victim was asleep.

The pensioner woke to find Lane in his room. The intruder put him in a headlock, threw him out of bed, and caused an eye injury. Lane threatened the terrified victim with a claim he had a knife, demanding more cash.

The thug raided a drawer for money but dropped the envelope as he fled the scene.

Police Track Down and Arrest Lane

CCTV showed Lane hopping into a taxi nearby after the robbery. Officers followed and arrested him at the drop-off address.

Detective Constable Christian Bryant of the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Neighbourhood Enforcement Team said:

“Darren Lane targeted his victim twice, putting him through two distressing ordeals in less than a week. Our swift investigation identified him as the culprit and brought him before the court to face justice.”

“We will continue to act decisively to bring violent offenders who target people and their property to justice.”
