HGV Driver Jailed for Fatal Shropshire Crash
A man has been slammed with a four-year jail term after a deadly road crash in Shropshire.
Patrick Casey Found Guilty of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving
Patrick Casey, 22, from County Monaghan, Ireland, was convicted on November 7 for causing the death of 24-year-old Callum Powell. The tragic smash happened on the A5 at Nesscliffe back in January 2023.
The court heard Casey was driving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) when he tried to overtake another HGV on a single carriageway. He crashed head-on into Callum’s Vauxhall Astra. Callum, who lived in Ruyton, Shropshire, died instantly at the scene.
Four Years Behind Bars & Seven-Year Driving Ban
At Shrewsbury Crown Court, Casey was locked up for four years and two months. He also got a driving ban stretching over seven years and a month.
Sergeant Alex Saxton of Telford’s Operational Policing Unit weighed in:
“This is a tragic case that’s devastated everyone involved. The whole thing could’ve been avoided if Casey made safer choices behind the wheel of such a powerful vehicle.”
He added, “While this sentence can’t bring Callum back, I hope it warns all road users to be more careful. Reckless decisions at speed can have deadly consequences.”
Road Safety Reminder: Think Twice Before Overtaking
- Always follow the Highway Code when overtaking, especially around large vehicles like HGVs.
- Ensure the road ahead is clear and overtake only when safe and legal.
- Remember, passing big vehicles takes longer—make sure you have enough room to complete your manoeuvre.
- Take extra care at night and in poor visibility—you’re less able to judge speed and distance then.
Stay safe out there – one bad move can cost a life.
