Arsonist Slammed with Four Years for Barn Blaze

A roaming troublemaker has been locked up for four years after torching a barn in Bratton, sparking chaos for a local farmer.

Liam Jones’ Fiery Crime

Liam Jones, 29, with no fixed address, was handed his jail term at Swindon Crown Court on April 22. On January 24, he deliberately set fire to the barn on Quarry Lane before phoning the police to confess.

Jones pleaded guilty the next day at Swindon Magistrates’ Court. Besides prison, he faces three years on licence and a £228 victim surcharge.

Devastating Impact on Farming Business

The blaze wiped out vital winter feed and straw bedding, costing the farmer around £25,000. Roughly 300 feed bales and 30 large straw bales were lost.

“The impact this has had on me and my business has been vast,” the farmer said. “The fire caused stress to young cattle nearby, some even developed coughs from smoke inhalation. This could lead to long-term health issues and stunted growth.”

“I had to scramble to find alternative housing for the cattle, which was tough considering their different ages. The whole ordeal has been hugely stressful for my family, especially my two young children who were deeply upset by what happened.”

Police Crack Down on Rural Crime

Crime Investigator Maria Doyle blasted the blaze as “reckless and dangerous,” highlighting the emotional and financial wreckage it caused.

“This was a serious offence that could have escalated even further. Wiltshire Police prioritise stopping rural crime and won’t hesitate to nail offenders like Jones,” she warned.

Wiltshire Police urge anyone affected by rural crime to report it immediately by calling 101, or 999 in emergencies.
