Knife-wielding yob caged for hurling racist and homophobic abuse at railway staff

Disgrace at Woking Station

John Gilbert, 40, a homeless troublemaker, has been locked up for 16 months after a vile rampage at Woking railway station. Gilbert stormed through the gates without scanning his ticket on 1 August 2024. When staff asked him to comply, he launched into a verbal tirade, spewing racist and homophobic abuse. Things turned violent when he attacked a train guard trying to calm him down. Police found a knife on him when they swooped to make the arrest.

Judge Slams ‘Shocking and Unacceptable’ Conduct

Appearing at Guildford Crown Court on 20 March, Gilbert pleaded guilty to racially and homophobically aggravated harassment, assault, and carrying a knife. The judge condemned his actions as “shocking and unacceptable,” highlighting the distress caused to staff just doing their jobs. Gilbert was sentenced to 16 months behind bars.

BTP Sends Warning: Abuse Won’t Be Tolerated

“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the offences committed. Rail staff should be able to carry out their duties without facing verbal abuse, violence, or threats. We hope this conviction sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated,”

said a British Transport Police spokesperson.

Support for Staff and Call to Report Abuse

The BTP praised station staff for their bravery and professionalism during the ordeal and promised ongoing support for the victims. They urge anyone witnessing similar abuse on public transport to report it immediately by calling British Transport Police on 61016 or via the BTP app.
