Knife-Wielding Attacker Gets Nearly 12 Years for Brutal Police Assault

A brutal attack on three Cleveland Police officers in Stockton has landed Mark Fox, 35, from Billingham, behind bars for 11 years and eight months. Fox admitted to causing grievous bodily harm without intent and was convicted of wounding with intent following a trial.

Violent Knife Attack Shocks Billingham

On June 2, 2023, officers responded to welfare concerns at a Corfe Crescent address in Billingham. They were met by Fox, who lunged at them with a knife. Two officers suffered puncture wounds, while a third was slashed. All required hospital treatment and stitches for their injuries.

Officers Praised for Bravery as Attacker Sentenced

Teesside Crown Court handed down Fox’s hefty sentence on July 15. Superintendent John Wrintmore slammed the savage assault as “shocking and truly disgraceful,” highlighting the daily dangers police face protecting the public.

“Police put their lives at risk every day… no one should be attacked while performing their duties,” said Wrintmore.

The brave officers were honoured as regional winners at the National Police Bravery Awards 2024, recognising their courage during the terrifying attack.

Rising Assaults on Police Spark Concern

Fox’s violent attack is part of a worrying trend. Cleveland Police reported 245 assaults on officers in the past year – a sharp increase reflecting a nationwide surge. Across the UK, 79,091 officers were assaulted in 2023, the highest rate in a decade.

Superintendent Wrintmore urged the public and criminal justice system to back emergency workers fully.

“Fox’s actions were extremely dangerous and reckless. This sentence sends a strong message – violence against police won’t be tolerated,” he said.
