Man Jailed for Life Over Fatal Stabbing of Young Ipswich Mum

Ipswich horror: A 27-year-old man has been locked up for life after brutally stabbing a 26-year-old mother to death on a busy street last summer.

Life Sentence for Brutal Murder

Logan Burnett, from All Saints Road, Ipswich, was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 24 years today at Ipswich Crown Court. He pleaded guilty in November to murdering Courtney Mitchell, a young mother of three.

The Fatal Stabbing

The horrific attack unfolded on 6 August 2024 at around 7:10pm on busy Burrell Road. Police rushed to reports of a woman under attack. Despite desperate efforts by passers-by and emergency crews, Courtney died shortly after arriving at hospital. A post-mortem revealed fatal stab wounds to her chest.

History of Abuse and Threats

Courtney had suffered ongoing physical and verbal abuse from Burnett. Friends revealed she had repeatedly faced death threats from him. On the day of the murder, Burnett tried to contact her 22 times over five hours and made direct threats to acquaintances about her.

That evening, Courtney was out with friends near Stoke Bridge when they spotted Burnett. Panic set in, but Burnett caught up with them on Burrell Road, where he viciously attacked and fatally stabbed her in front of witnesses.

Swift Arrest After Manhunt

Burnett fled across the river but was quickly named suspect. Police launched an urgent manhunt and caught him the next morning at a house in northeast Ipswich. When arrested, he coldly asked, “What, so she died?” He was charged with murder on 8 August and has been in custody since.

Police and Family React

Detective Superintendent Nicola Wallace blasted the attack as a “brutal and planned execution”. She said,

“This horrific and senseless attack happened in front of innocent bystanders and friends. Burnett’s actions have devastated Courtney’s family, who now face life without their daughter, sister, and mother.”

She stressed Suffolk Police’s dedication to fighting domestic abuse through early intervention and awareness.

Courtney’s heartbroken family said after the sentencing,

“No sentence will bring Courtney back. She was a loving mother, daughter, and friend. We vow to keep her memory alive and fight for change to protect other women from violent relationships.”

They called on authorities to crack down on domestic violence and knife crime, insisting “enough is enough.”

Community Shock and Calls for Action

The murder sent shockwaves through Ipswich. Candlelight vigils and domestic violence awareness campaigns have been held in her memory. Locals expressed anger over missed warning signs and frustration at the deadly outcome.
