Man Jailed for Brutal Murder of Beloved NI Tattoo Artist
A man has been locked up for at least nine years for the savage killing of Aidan Mann, a 28-year-old tattoo artist from Northern Ireland, known as Zen Black. Mann was stabbed 14 times in a vicious attack on Church Street, Downpatrick, back in January 2022.
Brutal Attack on Innocent Artist
Barry Donnelly, 38, from Church Street, Downpatrick, pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility. At Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday, he was handed an indeterminate sentence with a minimum nine-year term before parole consideration. The court ruled Mann was completely innocent and didn’t provoke the fatal assault.
A Family’s Heartbreak
Following the sentencing, Aidan’s mother, Sonya Mann, laid bare the family’s pain. “Donnelly stole my life when he killed my son,” she said, recalling how her son was chased down Church Street “like an animal.” She spoke of the terror and suffering Aidan faced in those final moments—a grief that will never heal.
Psychotic Attack, Chilling CCTV Footage
- Donnelly was “actively psychotic” during the killing, a court heard.
- He also admitted to previous violent offences including assault and offensive weapons possession.
- CCTV filmed the deadly chase, with Donnelly pursuing Mann, who wore a motorcycle helmet, before cornering and stabbing him by a car dealership.
- Passersby intervened, pinning Donnelly down and calling emergency services.
Donnelly tried to claim the stabbing was revenge for his brother’s murder the night before, a lie quickly dispelled by investigators. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and treated in a psychiatric unit, his defence lawyer said Donnelly was unaware of his illness until after the “terrible act.”
Police Condemn Senseless Killing
PSNI Detective Inspector Foreman slammed the attack as “senseless.” He praised the quick actions of the public who stopped the attack and called for help. “No words can undo this tragedy,” he said, offering condolences to everyone who loved Aidan Mann.
