Brutal Belfast Bladed Attacker Jailed for Over a Decade
Derek McOwen, 29, has been locked up for ten and a half years after a savage knife attack in Belfast city centre last July. McOwen pled guilty to two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a blade in public, Belfast Crown Court heard.
Random Stabbing Spree Leaves Two Men Seriously Hurt
The horror unfolded in the early hours of July 7, 2022, when McOwen launched an unprovoked attack on two strangers. The first victim was struck on Bedford Street, and the second on Amelia Street. Both men suffered severe injuries and required extensive medical care.
Detective Warns of Serious Threat to Public Safety
“These unprovoked attacks left two innocent individuals with life-altering injuries,” said Detective Sergeant McGearty, who led the investigation. “Our priority is public safety, and McOwen’s sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes.”
Three Years Extended Licence to Follow Prison Sentence
Besides the prison term, McOwen will face a three-year extended licence upon release. Authorities will closely monitor him to manage any potential risk during his reintegration back into the community.
