Step-son Jailed for Manslaughter After Fatal Attack on Beloved Stepdad
Bradleigh Shepherd has been locked up for three years and two months at Minshull Street Crown Court today. The sentencing follows a grim chapter that began four years ago when Shepherd’s brutal attack on his stepfather, Stephen Rimmer, led to the latter’s tragic death. Shepherd had earlier admitted manslaughter.
Stephen Rimmer’s Final Days
Stephen ended up in Royal Oldham Hospital’s A&E after sustaining a fracture and bleeding from the assault the night before. While under intensive care, he suffered a heart attack and, despite medical staff’s best efforts, never regained consciousness. He passed away in March 2020, leaving family and friends devastated.

Stephen’s family described him as a “gentle giant” — a caring son, brother, and devoted stepfather to Kimberley. They remembered him as kind-hearted and popular, sending thanks for the community’s support during their heartbreaking loss. “He truly lived life to the fullest,” they said.
Police: Justice Served, But a Warning Issued
Detective Chief Inspector Nicola McCulloch of GMP’s Major Incident Team called the case “very upsetting” and praised the painstaking investigation, which involved complex medical evidence and took years to resolve. “We will not give up until we uncover the truth,” she said, expressing hope the sentence offers comfort to Stephen’s family.
McCulloch also sounded a stark warning about the dangers of one-punch assaults and urged victims of domestic violence to seek help immediately. “If you think you’re a victim, get in touch with Greater Manchester Police without delay,” she urged.
