Domestic Abuse Horror in Trafford: Man Jailed for Violent Decade-Long Relationship
On Friday 14 October 2022, police in Trafford, Greater Manchester, were bombarded with domestic abuse disclosures from a 25-year-old woman. She revealed a nightmare ten-year relationship with a violent partner.
Suspect Arrested and Charged After Violent Rampage
A 31-year-old man, Joshua Fregene, was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm and criminal damage. Further investigation uncovered a history of abuse against the same woman.
On Saturday 15 October, Fregene was re-arrested and charged with:
- Actual bodily harm
- Criminal damage to property
- Controlling and coercive behaviour
He pleaded not guilty at Manchester & Salford Magistrates Court on 17 October but was remanded pending trial.
Three Years Behind Bars and a Five-Year Restraining Order
On 13 April 2023, Fregene was finally sentenced to three years and one month in prison. He also received a 5-year restraining order forbidding contact with his victim.
Detective Praises Victim’s Bravery, Reveals Shocking Abuse Details
Detective Ross Sidebottom of GMP’s Trafford District said: “Firstly, I want to acknowledge and commend the victim’s bravery for coming forward and speaking to us about the abuse Fregene inflicted upon her.
“The last few months have been extremely distressing for her and her loved ones throughout this investigation and trial.
“Their relationship was marked by explosive arguments that quickly turned violent. Fregene controlled her every move, constantly accusing her of cheating and forcing her to hand over her phone to check on her fidelity.
“In May 2022, he punched her arms and nose, leaving bruises, a nosebleed, and a black eye. Later that year, in a rage, he smashed her phone after an argument.
“She was even prevented from owning a phone herself, leaving her stranded and fearful for her and her children’s safety.
“While six months pregnant, she was hit in the stomach with an object thrown by Fregene. He humiliated her by following her upstairs and dousing her with water.
“The emotional abuse was relentless. He gaslit her into feeling responsible for his misery and threatened to overdose on drugs. When she tried to call for help, he strangled her.
“In October 2022, he repeatedly punched her as she curled up in a ball, begging him to stop. He threatened to slit her throat and sent her a twisted ‘suicide note’ blaming her for their children growing up without a father.
“Fregene’s crimes are utterly disgraceful. His cruel disregard for the victim and her children’s welfare is despicable. He’s a dangerous man who got what he deserves today. I hope this sentence brings some peace to all victims and their loved ones.”
