Violent shop robber jailed in Newport after punching staff
Daniel Taylor, 30, has been locked up for attacking shop workers during a brazen robbery in Newport.
Robbery turns violent at Central Convenience
On 21 March at around 2pm, Taylor strolled into Central Convenience on High Street, Newport, and asked about alcohol. He left but came back 10 minutes later to buy sweets. When a staff member opened the till, Taylor snatched cash over the counter and yelled at the cashier before landing a punch to their face.
Off-duty worker tries to intervene – gets battered
An off-duty employee in the store tried to stop Taylor but was punched and kicked in the struggle. The violent thief then dashed out with cash but carelessly left his mobile phone behind.
Quick police response leads to arrest
Taylor fled to a nearby hotel to change his clothes but was soon spotted by officers patrolling the area. He was found hiding in a skip behind Halfords and arrested. During custody, he admitted to the robbery and was discovered with £20 on him.
20 months behind bars for repeated violence
At Isle of Wight Crown Court on 29 April, Taylor pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery. On 31 May, he was sentenced to 20 months in prison.
“Officers on the Isle of Wight work hard to target retail criminals and protect businesses,” said DC Lou Daniels. “We deal with habitual shoplifters and those abusive to staff, but offenders like Taylor who use physical violence will never be tolerated.”
“The community can be reassured police acted swiftly, and Taylor is now behind bars.”
