Cambridgeshire Killer Jailed for Life in Shocking Double Murder
A nomad gunman has been locked up for life after gunning down a father and son in their own homes in quiet Cambridgeshire villages.
Brutal Shootings Just Minutes Apart
Stephen Alderton, 67, shot Joshua Dunmore, 32, twice in the hallway of his Bluntisham home at 9.09pm on March 29. Less than half an hour later, he struck again.
At around 9.40pm, Alderton shot Gary Dunmore, 57, three times inside his house in Sutton, near Ely.
Fugitive Caught Hours Later
Alderton fled in his campervan but was arrested at 1.30am the next day on the M5 near Worcester. He refused to answer police questions and was charged with two counts of murder and possession of a firearm.
Sentenced to a Minimum of 30 Years
He pleaded guilty to the murders in June at Cambridge Crown Court but denied the firearms charge, which was left on file.
On October 23, Alderton was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years. This was increased to 30 years on January 23, 2024, at the Court of Appeal.
“Stephen Alderton turned a family dispute into a double tragedy by his rash and brutal actions,” said DCI Katie Dounias from the major crime unit.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time. No sentence can undo the trauma, but hopefully this brings some solace.”
