Nationwide Hunt for 12-Year-Old Who Stole BMW and Towed Caravan 40 Miles
A massive manhunt is on after a 12-year-old boy failed to show up in court over a shocking crime in North Yorkshire. At just 11 years old, he allegedly stole a BMW and towed a caravan dangerously for over 40 miles along the A1(M) motorway.
Daring Theft Caught Police Off Guard
The incident happened on March 7, 2024, when a BMW 4×4 with cloned number plates was pinched from a caravan holiday park near Thirsk. The young lad then hooked up a caravan and drove recklessly down the motorway before police finally stopped him.
North Yorkshire Police described the scene as “extraordinary and extremely dangerous.” Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Owner’s Shock and Police Response
“We arrived at the caravan site just as they had hitched it up and were driving away with it,” said caravan owner Janine Forth. “If it hadn’t been for quick thinking and the amazing response from the police, god knows what would have happened.”
Boy Fails to Appear in Court—Warrant Issued
The boy was due to face Harrogate Magistrates last week on charges of vehicle theft, dangerous driving, and handling stolen goods. After skipping the hearing, an arrest warrant was issued, triggering a UK-wide search.
A court spokesperson confirmed: “A juvenile was due to appear charged with theft of a motor vehicle, driving it dangerously, and handling stolen goods. The defendant has not attended and an arrest warrant has been issued.”
Public Outcry and Calls for Tougher Youth Crime Measures
The case has stunned the public, raising questions about how someone so young managed such a daring stunt without earlier detection. Concerns are mounting over security at holiday parks and the availability of vehicles to children.
This high-risk juvenile offence adds fuel to an ongoing debate on youth crime prevention and rehabilitation, with many demanding urgent action.
Police Appeal for Information
Authorities urge anyone with information on the boy’s whereabouts to come forward immediately. Tips can be given anonymously via Crimestoppers or by calling 101.
