Cop Booted After Guilty Plea to Sexual Assault

PC Gareth Duggan has been axed from the force following a guilty verdict for gross misconduct. Duggan, who faced serious sexual assault charges, has been off duty since December 2021 after allegations first emerged.

From Courtroom to Career End

  • Cheshire Constabulary launched an investigation, charging Duggan on October 12, 2022.
  • On December 13, 2022, he pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault against a female.
  • He received a 32-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.
  • Duggan must register as a sex offender for seven years, complete 35 hours of rehab, do 200 hours unpaid work, and pay compensation to his victims.

Firm Message from Police Chiefs

At a misconduct hearing chaired by Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman, Duggan was dismissed and permanently barred from policing by being added to the College of Policing’s barred list.

“Today’s outcome demonstrates and reinforces our commitment to a zero-tolerance stance on inappropriate behaviour which has no place in policing,” said Detective Superintendent Jacqueline Downes, Head of Professional Standards.

“We expect high standards from all our employees. Police officers must never behave in ways that discredit the service or undermine public confidence, on or off duty.”

“The harm caused to victims cannot be underestimated. Their bravery in coming forward deserves full respect. We hope this case signals to victims in North Wales that their voices will be heard and supported.”
