Brutal Murder Shock: Alex Rodda Beaten to Death with Wrench

The partially clothed body of 19-year-old Alex Rodda was found dumped on a country lane near woods by refuse collectors the morning after a savage attack.

Horrific Attack with Heavy Wrench

Alex was hit at least 15 times with a heavy, long wrench, sustaining severe head and body injuries.

In the months before his death, Alex had been secretly involved in a relationship with Matthew Mason, who paid him money to keep quiet about it.

After the deadly assault, Mason left Alex’s body in the woods and disposed of his mobile phone before heading to local pubs The Red Lion in Pickmere and The Golden Pheasant in Plumley for a drink with friends.

Desperate Search and Mason’s Suspicious Actions

Concerned by Alex’s absence, his mother tried repeatedly to call him, but his phone was unreachable. Friends hadn’t seen or heard from him either.

Friends messaged Mason asking about Alex’s whereabouts, but most went unanswered. Mason later returned to the crime scene in the early hours of Friday 13 December, where he apparently tried to move Alex’s body into his car before giving up and driving off.

Police Snare Mason

A witness snapped a photo of a black Renault Clio parked near the woods at around 6pm on Thursday 12 December. Police linked the car to Mason.

Mason was arrested on the A41 near Telford around midday on 13 December with dried blood on his hands. Inside his boot were a bin bag containing blood-stained clothes, the wrench used in the attack, and Alex’s padded jacket.

He was charged with Alex’s murder and later found guilty at Chester Crown Court. Sentencing is set for Monday 25 January.

Investigation and Family’s Response

Detective Inspector Nigel Reid from Cheshire Police praised the dedicated team behind the painstaking investigation. He said:

“Mason had murder on his mind as he drove Alex to his death under the pretence of sexual activity. He chose a secluded spot, believing he’d get away with it. Alex was a popular young man, loved by family and friends. I hope this conviction brings some peace to them.”

Alex’s family spoke out after the verdict:

“Our son Alex was a wonderful, gentle, kind boy whose life was cruelly cut short by Matthew Mason. Mason showed no remorse and tried to blame Alex, but the jury saw through his lies. We thank them and Cheshire Constabulary for their hard work and support during this terrible time.”

David Keane, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, added:

“The community was shocked by Alex’s death. I commend the officers who worked tirelessly to bring justice to Alex and his loved ones. Our thoughts remain with them.”
