Grimsby Man Jailed for Menacing Shops with Meat Cleaver
Joe Page, 34, from St Michaels Road, Grimsby, has been locked up for nine years after admitting robbery and carrying a bladed weapon. The savage spree saw him threaten shopkeepers with a meat cleaver during two brazen robberies.
Brazen Blade Attack Foiled by Brave Staff
The first attack happened on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at around 7.30pm. Page burst into a Laceby Road shop waving the meat cleaver, trying to scare staff and grab the tills’ cash. But a quick-thinking employee tackled him, wrestling the weapon away. Page fled empty-handed, ditching the cleaver and stolen money.
Police Hunt Ends at Page’s Doorstep
Officers tracked Page down to his home, uncovering distinctive clothes he wore during the incident—some burnt outside his property. Further inquiries revealed he’d threatened others with the cleaver at another Laceby Road shop just two days earlier.
Detective Praises Staff Heroism, Vows Tough Justice
Page was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court on May 24. Detective Sergeant Andy Taylor, leading the probe, applauded the courage of the staff member who stopped Page. “Violent crime and robbery will never be tolerated,” he said. “We will keep fighting for justice and community safety.”
