Met Police Officer Charged Over Fatal Crash in West London
Cop Faces Death by Careless Driving Charge
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has formally charged 67-year-old Metropolitan Police officer Christopher Harrison with causing death by careless driving. The charge stems from a tragic crash in Earl’s Court, west London, earlier this year.
Fatal Collision on May 10
The incident happened at the junction of West Cromwell Road and Warwick Road on May 10, 2024. Police motorcyclist Officer Harrison struck 81-year-old pedestrian Helen Holland. Sadly, she later died from her injuries.
Thorough Investigation by IOPC Leads to Charges
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) conducted a detailed review before the decision to charge was made. Rosemary Ainslie, Head of the CPS Special Crime Division, highlighted how seriously the CPS takes collisions involving emergency service personnel. “This case shows the devastating impact traffic incidents can have,” she said.
Officer to Appear in Court
- Officer Harrison is expected in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 6, 2024.
- The CPS urged the public and media to avoid prejudging the case, emphasising the importance of a fair trial.
- The CPS stressed its role is to decide if charges are appropriate, not to determine guilt.
Helen Holland’s family is receiving support as they mourn their loss. This case acts as a stark reminder of the grave responsibility emergency responders carry when driving under urgent conditions and the critical need to follow safety rules.
