Mexican Student Caught in Child Sex Sting Gets 10 Years
Axel Torres-Vargas, a 21-year-old Mexican medical student studying in London, was slammed with a 10-year prison sentence for a string of horrifying child sex offences in Norwich. He also faces five years on licence. The grim verdict came down at Norwich Crown Court on December 19 after Torres-Vargas admitted guilt.
Seven Child Sex Charges and Indecent Images
Torres-Vargas pleaded guilty to:
- Arranging or facilitating a child sex offence
- Three counts of distributing indecent images of a child
- Three counts of making indecent images of a child
He was slapped with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order issued by Norfolk Constabulary.
Trapped by Undercover Cop Posing as ‘Uncle Jim’
The student arrived in the UK on a short-term exchange from the US in June 2023. While based in London, he struck up online chats with someone he thought was the uncle of a 10-year-old girl. But ‘Uncle Jim’ was a police officer in disguise. Their conversations quickly turned sinister, including the exchange of vile images. Torres-Vargas even planned to visit Norwich to abuse the child.
On June 28, he showed up at Norwich Railway Station as planned – and was immediately arrested.
Shocking Haul of 1,000 Indecent Images Uncovered
Police uncovered about 1,000 indecent pictures and videos on Torres-Vargas’s devices. Around 300 of these were the most graphic kind. Investigators also found chats with unknown third parties discussing child sexual abuse.
Recorder Michael Turner condemned Torres-Vargas, saying he had a “dark side” that was “disgusting and evil.”
Detective Sergeant Craig Dixon said: “Torres-Vargas had images and videos of the most disturbing sexual abuse of children stored on his mobile phone. He poses a significant risk of serious sexual harm to children. I hope this sentence sends a message of how seriously these kinds of offences are taken.”
