Cop Crash Driver Escapes Immediate Jail with Suspended Sentence
BMW Smash Hospitalises Officer on Dorset’s A31
Hassan Babaker, 35, narrowly avoided jail after causing a crash that put a police officer in hospital. The incident happened at 9:30pm on 29 September 2025, when Babaker’s white BMW smashed into an unmarked police car between Stag Gate and Roundhouse Roundabout on the A31 near Sturminster Marshall.
Dorset Police confirmed the injured officer received treatment at the scene before being rushed to hospital. Fortunately, the officer’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening. Babaker walked away unscathed.
Suspended Sentence, Curfew, and Driving Ban for Babaker
At Bournemouth Crown Court, Babaker pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. He was sentenced to eight months in prison, but the term was suspended for one year. The court also ordered him to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and imposed a 10-week curfew.
On top of this, Babaker faces a 12-month driving ban and must pass an extended driving test before he can set foot behind the wheel again.
Rising Attacks on Emergency Workers Spark Concern
This crash highlights the growing risks emergency workers face on UK roads. Assault convictions against emergency workers have rocketed from 348 in 2018 to over 14,000 in 2024, according to Ministry of Justice figures.
Sentencing trends show fewer suspended sentences since 2020. Community orders now make up 34% of such offences, immediate jail time over 22%, and suspended sentences have dropped from around 10% to about 1,400 cases a year.
The justice system appears to be leaning towards community penalties and fines for less serious offences, but the dangers to emergency crews remain all too real.
