Driver Jailed After Smashing Into Police Officer at Crash Scene in Maghull

62-Year-Old Sentenced for Reckless Crash

A 62-year-old driver has been locked up for two years and four months after hitting a police officer at a crash site in Maghull, seriously injuring him.

Richard Ainscough, from Whitburn, Skelmersdale, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today. He was sentenced to 28 months behind bars and banned from driving for two years.

Scene of Chaos: Officer Hurt as Ford Kuga Mounts Central Reservation

The shocking incident happened on the morning of Wednesday, 27 December 2023. Police had been called to Northway, Maghull, after a hit-and-run involving a cyclist.

While officers were managing the scene with emergency lights flashing, Ainscough’s Ford Kuga swerved over the central reservation from the southbound to northbound lanes. It struck an officer leaning into a car window.

The injured cop suffered a dislocated shoulder and fractured elbow, both needing extensive surgery.

Ainscough Charged with Dangerous Driving and More

Police arrested Ainscough at the scene. He now faces charges including:

  • Causing serious injury by dangerous driving
  • Driving while unfit through drug use
  • Driving with eyesight below legal standards

Police Slam ‘Reckless’ Move – Officer ‘Lucky to Be Alive’

Detective Sergeant Christine Bennett of Merseyside’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit blasted Ainscough’s actions:

“It is incredible that Ainscough chose to drive in such a reckless manner, and it is only by sheer good luck that the officer was not killed.”

“Our officers put themselves at risk daily to protect the public. We will not tolerate drivers who ignore road safety rules and endanger lives.”
