Brutal Knife Attack on 9-Year-Old Sparks Horror in Christchurch
A quiet evening in Christchurch turned nightmare as a nine-year-old girl was savagely stabbed in a communal stairwell at a Glider Close property. The shocking attack unfolded at 5:55pm while the girl was chatting with a friend on the stairs.
Jordan Wilkes, 29, launched a ruthless assault, stabbing the young victim in the shoulder, jaw, and leg. The girls fled to a nearby flat, where quick-thinking residents shielded them and called emergency services.
‘Horrific Knife Attack’ Shakes Community
Detective Chief Inspector Aimee Schock of BCP CID branded the incident a “horrific knife attack” that rocked Bournemouth and Christchurch communities. She noted such attacks on children are rare but warned of the need for ongoing vigilance and public safety awareness.
Emergency crews arrived fast. The girl suffered wounds to her neck, shoulder, side, and knee. She was rushed to hospital for urgent treatment. Wilkes was arrested at the scene without resistance.
CPS Hails Fast Justice and Victim’s Courage
The Crown Prosecution Service praised Dorset Police and prosecutors for their swift, determined work. Senior Crown Prosecutor Kelly Newman described the attack as “every parent’s worst nightmare.” She hailed the victim and her friend for “remarkable bravery” in giving evidence against Wilkes, securing his conviction for attempted murder at Bournemouth Crown Court.
On 23 April 2025, Wilkes was sentenced to 30 years in prison plus a five-year extended licence. The judge highlighted the extreme violence and the girl’s vulnerability.
Community Outraged, Calls for Action on Knife Crime
The attack has reignited anger over rising knife crime. Social media users lauded the children’s courage, with one calling them “heroes” and demanding justice. Another pleaded, “This should never happen again—what are we doing to protect our children?”
Bournemouth Safer Communities Partnership has ramped up efforts to tackle youth violence through education and prevention campaigns. Residents remain divided—some demand harsher sentences, others want more focus on rehabilitation and mental health support.
Support Pledged as Christchurch Mourns
Local authorities have promised ongoing support for the victim and her family, recognising the lasting trauma caused. The Ministry of Justice also highlights the psychological toll on child witnesses.
“This was an appalling and senseless act of violence against a defenceless child,” said DCI Schock. “I want to commend the victim and her friend for their incredible bravery – they helped bring a very dangerous man to justice.”
Jordan Wilkes will spend at least three decades behind bars, but the scars of this one terrifying night will linger in Christchurch for years to come.
