Puppy Starved to Death in North Yorkshire Shambles

A young woman from North Yorkshire has been banned from owning animals for at least 10 years after her eight-month-old puppy, Joey, was found dead from severe starvation in a filthy crate outside her home.

Horrific Scene Behind Closed Doors

RSPCA Inspector Rowena Proctor uncovered the tragic discovery on February 18, 2024. Joey, a Chihuahua/Shih Tzu cross, lay emaciated inside a crate in Dazie Howe’s Goldsborough garden near Harrogate. The crate was surrounded by faeces and urine and covered with a Christmas blanket.

Inspector Proctor said: “The smell was overwhelming. Joey was just skin and bones, suffering terribly in a tiny cage.”

A microchip confirmed Joey belonged to Howe, who initially denied ownership and offered sham excuses about the puppy’s death.

Post-Mortem Reveals Prolonged Starvation

The post-mortem exam stunned vets. Joey’s stomach was empty, her intestines barely contained anything, proving she hadn’t been fed for weeks. A veterinary expert confirmed Joey endured a month of hunger pangs, abdominal cramps, and organ failure before death.

The vet said: “This was heartbreaking neglect that could easily have been prevented.”

Changing Stories and Court Punishment

Howe’s shock excuses crumbled under investigation. She went from denying ownership to claiming Joey died from a seizure — claims disproven by breeder photos showing a healthy, vibrant puppy.

At york/" title="York" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">York Magistrates’ Court, Howe, 25, was slapped with an 18-month community order including 25 days rehabilitation, and banned indefinitely from owning animals, with a minimum 10-year wait before she can apply to lift the ban.

Inspector Proctor: “Joey was a tiny dog who needed so little care. Instead, she was locked away, starved, and neglected.”

This grim case highlights the cruelty some animals suffer behind closed doors—and the tough penalties for those who fail their furry friends.
