Ex-Cop Jailed for £50,000 Burglary and Harassment
A serving City of London Police officer has been locked up after stealing £50,000 during a shocking burglary and harassing his partner, a court heard today.
Officer Ditches Badge Before Crime Uncovered
Christopher Trowton, 39, from Devon, was sentenced to three years and seven months at Kingston Crown Court. The former copper admitted to raiding a cash stash during an off-duty break-in in Hampshire in May 2022.
He quit the force on June 27, 2022 – just weeks after the heist – before police launched their investigation.
Burglar and Partner Harasser
- Trowton stole £50,000 from a home while off-duty.
- The Met arrested him on August 10, 2022, charging him two days later.
- He also admitted harassing his partner, leading to a restraining order.
Police Outraged Over Ultimate Betrayal
“Trowton knew his actions were illegal and morally disgusting. He terrified his victims,” said Detective Superintendent Carly Humphreys, head of City of London Police Professional Standards. “Being a serving officer makes this betrayal even worse. His actions have severely damaged trust in policing.”
“We’ll hold an accelerated misconduct hearing and put him on the barred list immediately,” Humphreys added.
Trowton’s sentences run together: 43 months for burglary and 21 weeks for harassment. This grim case exposes a shocking betrayal within the police force, shaking public faith to the core.
