Jealous Husband Faces Sentencing for Wife’s Brutal Murder in Newmarket
Today, Olubunmi Abodunde stands trial for the savage murder of his wife, Taiwo Abodunde, bringing a grim chapter in Newmarket to a close. The 48-year-old husband’s jealous rage ended in tragedy last November.
Shocking Discovery After Domestic Violence Call
On November 27 last year, police were called to the couple’s home following a domestic violence incident. Officers found Taiwo, 41, with her skull brutally smashed. Despite desperate attempts to save her, she died from her injuries.
Financial Struggles and Turbulent Marriage Revealed in Court
At Ipswich Crown Court, Abodunde admitted the murder after initially denying it. The couple, who moved from Nigeria to the UK in 2022, faced financial strain and a rocky relationship. While Taiwo worked as a healthcare assistant nurse, Abodunde failed to secure a job as a civil engineer and took on menial work.
The court heard their marriage was riddled with accusations of infidelity and repeated domestic violence. Shocking details emerged of the abuse Taiwo suffered, including strangulation, broken ribs, and a fatal blow delivered with a skateboard.
Defence Claims Medication, But Brutality Points to Revenge
Abodunde’s defence argued that medication affected his behaviour and that the violence was unusual for him. Prosecutors slammed this, highlighting the brutality of the attack as a calculated act of vengeance.
The sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court today will bring some closure to a family shattered by senseless violence. Police continue to seek information from the public to fully unravel the case and deliver justice for Taiwo Abodunde.
