Tube Worker Fatally Assaulted at Ilford Station – Loved Ones Pay Tearful Tribute
Jorge Ortega, 61, an Elizabeth Line worker, has tragically died after a brutal attack at Ilford station in east London. Family, friends, and colleagues have hailed him as “the kindest soul” following the shocking incident.
Horrific Attack at Ilford Station
On the evening of Wednesday, 4 December, Jorge was violently assaulted at Ilford station, suffering severe head injuries. Emergency services, including British Transport Police (BTP), were called at 8:50pm. Despite being rushed to hospital, Jorge died two days later on Friday, 6 December.
Man Charged Over Attack
Ayodele Jamgbadi, 28, from Kingston Road, Ilford, has been charged with grievous bodily harm, affray, and possession of a prohibited weapon. Prosecutors plan to upgrade the charges to reflect Jorge’s death. Jamgbadi appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court and is remanded in custody, set for trial at Inner London Crown Court on 7 January 2025.
Family Heartbreak
“Our Dad was the most loving person, the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting. He was an amazing family man and always put others first. He loved his grandchildren, and in turn, they adored him.”
“He was totally devoted to our Mum and loved her beyond what words can describe. Having been together for over 38 years, he is an example of what a great man should be like. Dad is and will always be in our hearts.”
Decades of Dedicated Service
Jorge had worked on the railways for 24 years as a customer experience assistant for MTREL, Elizabeth Line’s operator. MTREL Managing Director Mike Bagshaw said:
“This is an unimaginable loss. Jorge served the railway community with dedication and kindness for more than two decades. He has lost his life simply for carrying out his job. Everyone has the right to feel safe and protected at work.”
Community Outrage and Support
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the attack “absolutely tragic,” stressing that no one should face violence at work. RMT union leader Mick Lynch added:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our member. The whole union sends its condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. This senseless act of violence highlights the unacceptable abuse faced by rail staff.”
Investigation Underway
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell called the attack “horrific and tragic” but reassured the public it was an isolated incident. Specialist family liaison officers are supporting Jorge’s family during the ongoing investigation.
Calls for Safer Workplaces
This heartbreaking case has sparked fresh demands for better protection for transport workers. Officials and organisations are pushing for tougher safety measures to ensure no worker faces harm while doing their job.
