Cop and Family Caught in Speeding Scam! A West Mercia police officer and his parents have pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. They submitted false documents to dodge speeding penalties – but their scam was quickly busted.

Speeding Cover-Up Unravelled

19-year-old Joseph Mudd, a West Mercia Police officer, was caught speeding at 65mph in a 50mph zone on April 26, 2022. Instead of owning up, Joseph hatched a scheme with his mother, Caroline Mudd, 42, and stepfather, Matthew Mudd, 36, to shift the blame.

Joseph falsely claimed his stepfather was driving, resulting in Matthew receiving a £100 fine and three penalty points on his licence.

Bragging Led to Bust

Joseph later boasted to fellow officers that he was the actual driver. Suspicious colleagues reported him, triggering a police probe that exposed the deception.

Sentence Delivered—But No Jail Time

All three admitted guilt at Worcester Crown Court on March 22, 2023. The trio were handed suspended 12-week prison sentences, 200 hours of community work each, and £510 in court costs to be shared and paid within three weeks.

Emily Clewer, CPS: “Police officers should be held to high standards and are expected to be moral beacons. It’s a gross breach of trust when those who uphold the law commit a crime. Joseph Mudd colluded with his family to deceive the court. Thankfully, his colleagues reported his inexcusable conduct, and all three defendants have been sentenced. Anyone who lies to avoid consequences should expect prosecution.”
