Shoplifter Busted After £3,000 Spree at Waterstones in Crouch End
Serial Thief Caught After Months of Raids
Paul Mangal, 58, from Hornsey Rise Gardens, has been handed a 12-month suspended prison sentence for nicking over £3,000 worth of board games, toys, and books from Waterstones on The Broadway, Crouch End. His theft spree stretched from April 2023 to February 2025.
At Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 29, Mangal was also slapped with a two-year ban from entering Crouch End and Hornsey. As an extra measure, he’s forbidden from carrying a suitcase in these areas — a nod to his method of concealing stolen goods.
Police Crack Mystery with CCTV and Community Tip-Offs
The detailed investigation was led by Sergeant James Elliott from the North London policing team, who praised the vital cooperation from Waterstones staff. He revealed:
“Through building strong relationships with staff at this branch of Waterstones, we were able to identify Mangal by assessing his patterns of offending, which appeared to ramp up around Christmas and became almost daily until his arrest.”
Officers boosted patrols and teamed up with local retailers to gather key CCTV footage. Mangal was nabbed on February 23, moments after trying to sneak out stolen goods hidden in a suitcase.
Haringey Cracks Down on Shoplifting
This case is part of a wider blitz on retail crime in Haringey, where police have doubled ward officers since February 2024. Regular store visits encourage business owners to report incidents promptly.
Sergeant Elliott added:
“We hope the success of this case will encourage more businesses to work closely with us so we can remove the most prolific shoplifters from our streets.”
Thanks to these efforts, thefts along The Broadway have dropped by a whopping 35% since December 2024.
New Tech and Tactics to Tackle Retail Crime
Looking ahead, the force plans to roll out Live Facial Recognition (LFR) patrols in the area to swiftly spot repeat offenders. Plus, officers will take to bicycles in the summer for quicker responses to thefts.
