Ageing Shopper Robbed in Daylight Horror! 25-Year-Old Jailed for Attack on 92-Year-Old

Shocking Mugging in Rainham

A 25-year-old thug has been locked up for over three years after violently robbing a 92-year-old woman in broad daylight. Jerry Maughan, from Wood Green, London, pleaded guilty to snatching a handbag from the pensioner while she was walking her dog near a churchyard on Church Path, Rainham.

The attack happened on the afternoon of 11 March 2024. Maughan first crouched to pet the woman’s dog, lulling her into a false sense of security, before yanking her bag away. The poor lady fought back but was thrown to the ground, hitting her face and leaving her shaken and injured.

Rapid Police Response Leads to Arrest

Kent Police were called just after 1pm when the distressed pensioner stumbled into a local High Street shop for help. Officers combed the area and arrested Maughan at a nearby address by 4pm that same day. He was charged the next morning and appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on 4 April 2025, where he admitted the robbery.

Judge Slams ‘Callous’ Attack, Sends Maughan Down for 3 Years 4 Months

Judge Robert Simmonds condemned Maughan’s “callous disregard” for the vulnerable victim and sentenced him to three years and four months behind bars.

Detective Constable Emma Laimbeer from Kent Police said: “This despicable man showed nothing but contempt for his victim – a pensioner simply out shopping and walking her dog. He cared nothing about her safety and subjected her to a frightening ordeal. His abhorrent actions have left a lasting impact.”

“I am pleased that Maughan was swiftly caught, charged, and is now behind bars. We will always work hard to bring perpetrators of such horrible crimes to justice.”

Community Voices Relief and Support for Victim

Locals in Rainham breathed a sigh of relief at the fast police action. A shop owner said: “It’s horrible to think this happened here. Glad the police caught him so quickly – it shows they’re protecting our community.”

On social media, another resident posted: “Justice served! Hope the lady recovers soon. No one should ever go through that, especially at her age.”

The victim is reportedly recovering but remains traumatised. Support services have been offered, with the community rallying around her.

Police Warn: Stay Alert, Stay Safe

Kent Police urge especially the elderly to take precautions when out alone:

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep valuables secure and out of sight.
  • Report any suspicious behaviour immediately.

This rapid arrest and successful prosecution sends a clear message: attacks on the vulnerable will not be tolerated.
