Brutal Tube Punch Kills 28-Year-Old – Attacker Jailed for Eight Years
Rakeem Miles, 23, from East Street, Southwark, has been locked up for eight years for the manslaughter of 28-year-old Samuel Winter. Miles’ single, savage punch at a London Underground station last August left Samuel with catastrophic brain injuries, leading to his death.
Fatal Punch at London Tube Station
On the evening of 22 August 2024, around 9:30pm, Samuel had just stepped off an eastbound Tube train and was making his way out of the station. Though there had been no words or interaction between the two, Miles followed Samuel after a brief brush on the escalator.
As Samuel passed through the ticket barriers and headed towards the stairs, Miles shouted after him, grabbed him from behind, ripped his top, and landed a brutal punch to the head. Samuel collapsed unconscious on the stairwell.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, performing CPR. Samuel was rushed to hospital but tragically died two days later, on 24 August, surrounded by family.
Quick Arrest, No Regret
Police arrested Miles swiftly after the attack. He showed no remorse and reportedly carried on with his evening despite the severity of the assault.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell said:
“It only took one punch from Miles to end Samuel’s life and forever change the lives of those around him. He showed no remorse for his actions, leaving Samuel at the station and continuing with his evening.”
Attwell praised Samuel’s family for their strength and urged the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
“Samuel’s family described him as gentle and kind, and he will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.”
Harsh Sentence for Unprovoked Attack
Miles was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court today (24 June 2024) to eight years in prison, with an extended 13-year licence period. He must serve just under five and a half years before becoming eligible for parole.
This case spotlights growing concerns about spontaneous violence in public spaces, especially on public transport. Police continue to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on violence across the transport network.
