Veteran Police Sergeant Cleared of Assault After Controversial Mobile Phone Stop
A respected Hampshire roads policing sergeant has been cleared of assault following a dramatic two-day appeal at Guildford Crown Court. Sgt Dave Sanderson, with over 25 years on the force, had been fighting to clear his name for nearly two years.
Off-Duty Officer Confronts Dangerous Motorcyclist
The incident happened in June 2016 when Sgt Sanderson, off duty and now based at Havant Roads Policing Unit, spotted a woman using her mobile phone while riding a motorcycle in Chandlers Ford. Known for his strict stance against mobile phone use behind the wheel, Sanderson felt compelled to intervene.
But things quickly escalated when the woman tried to drive off and allegedly threatened the officer. Despite this, Sanderson faced assault charges for his actions during the confrontation.
Conviction Overturned After Fierce Appeal
Last year, magistrates in Worthing found Sanderson guilty of assault by beating. However, yesterday’s Guildford Crown Court appeal cleared him of all wrongdoing.
“As a police officer, I have attended some of the most serious and fatal collisions in Hampshire,” Sanderson said previously. “I’ve had to break life-changing news to families killed due to people using mobiles while driving.”
Sanderson walked out of court with his reputation intact after nearly a quarter-century of public service.
Future Uncertain as Investigation Continues
While Sanderson was temporarily reassigned during the investigation, it remains unclear if he will return to his roads policing role. There is also no word on whether the woman caught using her phone has faced any charges.
