Top Cop Cleared After Two-Year Fight Over Mobile Phone Row
Dave Sanderson, a respected Hampshire roads policing sergeant with over 25 years on the force, has finally been cleared of assault following a dramatic two-day appeal at Guildford Crown Court. The incident had cast a shadow over his career for nearly two years.
Off-Duty Cop Confronts Dangerous Phone Use
While off duty in June 2016, Sanderson spotted a woman riding her motorcycle in Chandlers Ford, dangerously using her mobile phone. Known as a no-nonsense campaigner against phone use behind the wheel, he approached her to address the risk.
Assault Conviction Overturned on Appeal
The situation escalated when the woman tried to drive off and made threats against Sanderson. Despite his long-standing record, he was convicted last year of assault by beating in Worthing Magistrates’ Court. But this week, the Guildford Crown Court overturned the conviction, clearing the sergeant’s name.
“As a police officer, I have attended some of the most serious and fatal collisions in Hampshire,” Sanderson said. “I have had to break life-changing news to families who have lost loved ones because of people using mobiles.”
Future Uncertain After Career-Clouding Case
Sanderson, who was temporarily sidelined during the investigation, walked free with his reputation intact after nearly 25 years of service. It remains unclear whether he will return to his roads policing role. Meanwhile, there’s no word on whether the woman involved faces any legal action for using her mobile phone while riding.
