Teen gang savagely murder Bailey in Walsall knife attack
Bailey died from multiple stab wounds to his back, arms and legs despite desperate, on-the-spot open-heart surgery.
Fleeing a gang lifestyle – but caught in Walsall’s deadly turf war
The 18-year-old had moved from Coventry to Walsall two years ago, hoping to escape gang violence. Instead, he got caught up in local feuds.
Hunted and hunted down: The deadly chase
On 27 January 2023, Bailey was walking through Walsall town centre with a female friend after a taxi dropped them off near the market stalls. Suddenly, two stolen cars — a Toyota Verso and a Seat Leon — swerved towards them.
Bailey told his friend to “run” and tried to escape himself. The nine suspects had gathered earlier in a supermarket car park and drove into town seeking revenge for a previous attack Bailey was accused of against one of their brothers.
Brutal knife attack with machetes and zombie knives
The gang cornered Bailey by Lower Hall Lane but he managed to break free. The vehicles circled and caught him further down High Street, where six attackers jumped out and savagely attacked him with machetes and zombie knives.
Bailey was left bleeding on the pavement while one assailant even stopped to snap a photo of him on his mobile phone.
Burnt-out getaway cars and fast police response
The group fled to Wolverhampton, abandoning the cars on Slater Street and setting them alight just minutes after the attack.
Police arrived within five minutes and began CPR on Bailey, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.
Justice served: Seven teens convicted
A painstaking police probe examined hours of CCTV and mobile phone data, tracking the suspects’ every move.
In March, after a ten-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, seven teenagers aged 15 to 18 were found guilty of Bailey’s murder. Sentencing followed yesterday at the same court.
- Benjamin Wilkes, 18, of Guild Avenue, Bloxwich, received a life sentence with a minimum of 18 years behind bars.
- Patrick Brookes, 18, of Hunter Crescent, Walsall, got life with at least 20 years.
- Sonny Loveridge, 19, of Irvine Road, Bloxwich, sentenced to life, minimum 23 years.
- Ronan McCulloch, 18, of Livingstone Road, Bloxwich, handed life with 21 years minimum.
- Three other 17-year-olds were also convicted but remain unnamed due to their age.
The deadly attack highlights the violence still plaguing communities despite young people trying to escape gang life.
