Sheffield Man Charged Over Hate Post After Tragic West Brom Fan Death
A 55-year-old man from Sheffield has been charged after posting a vile message on social media following the tragic death of West Brom fan Mark Townsend at Hillsborough Stadium.
Offensive Post Sparks Outrage
Mark Townsend died during a medical emergency at Saturday’s Sheffield Wednesday vs. West Bromwich Albion game on September 28. Hours later, an abhorrent post appeared on X (formerly Twitter), referencing both Townsend’s death and the 1989 Hillsborough disaster that claimed 97 Liverpool fans.
The vile message was met with widespread condemnation from football fans and officials alike.
Police Take Action
South Yorkshire Police confirmed on Monday, September 30, that Richard Crisp of Hillsborough, Sheffield, has been charged with “sending communication/article of an indecent or offensive nature.”
Crisp has been released on bail but is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on October 14, 2024.
“A Sheffield man has been charged following malicious communications shared on social media after a man sadly died during the Sheffield Wednesday v West Bromwich Albion fixture on Saturday 28 September.”
Sheffield Wednesday Hits Back with Lifetime Ban
Sheffield Wednesday FC has slammed the behaviour as “outrageous” and confirmed they have handed the culprit a lifetime ban. The club declared a zero tolerance policy for unlawful social media activity.
“We condemn absolutely this outrageous behaviour and underline our zero tolerance policy towards unlawful activity on all social media platforms,” the club said. “Our thoughts remain with the loved ones of Mr. Townsend and the wider West Bromwich Albion community at this incredibly difficult time.”
