Somerset Caravan Park Boss Hit with £116k Bill for Destroying Protected Wildlife Haven
Caravan Chaos on Protected Land
John Holland, 59, from Moorlinch, is facing a massive £116,263 fine after illegally converting a precious Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) into a bustling caravan park. Taunton Crown Court slammed him for wrecking the vital Long Load habitat on Wet Moor, a key breeding ground for rare birds.
Over four years, Natural England exposed how Holland crammed more than 90 caravans and 40 vehicles onto just 1.2 hectares of protected grassland. He laid down 300 metres of tarmac roads and dumped household and commercial waste – all without a shred of permission.
Between 2011 and 2018, Holland tried and failed five times to get planning consent for a permanent caravan park. Each time, the Planning Inspectorate rejected his bid.
Wildlife Victims: Birds in Peril
This isn’t just any piece of land. It’s part of the internationally important Somerset Levels and Moors, a sanctuary for endangered birds like curlew, black-tailed godwit, Bewick’s swan, lapwing, and pochard. It’s also home to over 3% of the world’s Eurasian teal.
Natural England revealed Holland’s illegal expansion destroyed breeding sites and scared off protected species. He was charged with two offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in March 2023.
Criminal Lifestyle Unmasked
Holland’s crimes didn’t stop at environmental damage. In September 2023, he was convicted for threatening and abusing Natural England officers investigating his rogue caravan operation.
Even after declaring bankruptcy, Holland was found to have hidden assets worth over £1 million, tied to his unlawful activities. Authorities branded his conduct a “criminal lifestyle.”
The court ordered him to pay £116,263 within three months and to restore the site to natural grassland by January 2026. All caravans and infrastructure must be removed – or he faces unlimited fines plus £100 for every day of delay.
“You had numerous opportunities to rectify the damage but carried on regardless,” warned Judge Richard Shepherd. This was a deliberate and persistent offence showing flagrant disregard for the law.
Matt Heard, Natural England’s National Delivery Director, blasted Holland: “His blatant contempt for this vital conservation site and its endangered species is shocking. He chose big illegal profits over protecting one of England’s most precious wildlife habitats.”
What Exactly Are SSSIs?
Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are England’s top-tier natural spots protecting wildlife, plants, and geology. Established by law in 1981, these areas are strictly controlled. Break the rules, and you face criminal charges enforced by Natural England.
The Court Charges That Closed the Net
- From March 2018 to April 2022, Holland carried out unlawful construction, road-building, storage, and erected structures inside the SSSI without consent.
- He recklessly disturbed protected wildlife, fully aware of the land’s protected status.
This tough ruling sends a powerful warning: trash England’s treasured natural sites and you’ll pay – big time.
