First Suspect Charged in South Manchester Child Sex Abuse Probe

Detectives have charged their first suspect in a major investigation into historic child sexual exploitation in south Manchester.

Christopher Oates Faces Six Charges

Christopher Oates, 44, from Stockport, is one of 57 arrests made during the multi-agency probe known as Operation Green Jacket, launched in May 2019.

Oates has been charged with six sexual offences involving two girls aged 14 and 17, alleged to have occurred between May 2004 and February 2005.

Serious Offences Include Underage Sex and Possession of Firearm

He is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 12 September 2024, facing the following charges:

  • Three counts of engaging in underage sex with a 14-year-old girl;
  • One count of intentionally causing a 14-year-old girl to be sexually exploited;
  • One count of intentionally causing a 17-year-old girl to be sexually exploited;
  • One count of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

The Child Sexual Exploitation Major Investigation Team insists their work will continue relentlessly, vowing not to let the passage of time hinder bringing offenders to justice and securing justice for survivors.
