21-year-old from Swindon escapes jail after deadly police chase sparks terror
Reckless Chase Ends in Smash
Nathan Wiltshire, 21, from Calder Close, Haydon Wick, has been handed a suspended prison sentence following a high-speed police pursuit that left officers fearing for their lives. Wiltshire pled guilty at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on December 22 to multiple offences including failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and no insurance.
The drama unfolded in the early hours of October 28 when officers from the Dog Section and Armed Response Group spotted a Mercedes cruising through Pinehurst. Instead of pulling over, Wiltshire floored it, sparking a furious police chase.
Witnesses say Wiltshire tore down Whitworth Road at double the speed limit before swerving onto Thames Avenue, losing control and smashing into a metal fence.
Reckless Driver Faces Tough Penalties
Wiltshire’s punishment hits hard: a two-year driving ban, an extended retest, and a 36-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months. He must also complete 20 days of rehabilitation, pay £85 in court costs, and cough up a £187 surcharge.
PC Head slammed Wiltshire’s “dangerous” driving, warning: “At one particularly hazardous point, the vehicle mounted the pavement near a pub, causing damage to a footpath metal fence and deploying the airbags. It is fortunate that he didn’t injure himself, the passengers in the vehicle, or any other road user.”
Police Urge Public to Report Dangerous Driving
Wiltshire Police are calling on the public to report any illegal or dangerous driving they witness. If you spot reckless driving, ring 101 with details including descriptions and vehicle registration. For crimes in progress, dial 999 immediately to help keep roads safe.
