Peterborough man jailed for 5 years 8 months after savage domestic abuse spree

Brutal Assault in Front of Friends

A 22-year-old from Peterborough has been locked up for a terrifying campaign of domestic abuse. Tanveer Chowdhury, of Desborough Avenue, Stanground, inflicted a horrifying 90-minute attack on his girlfriend last summer.

On 27 July 2024, Chowdhury launched a prolonged and vicious assault at her home in Cambourne, near Cambridge. He stripped and beat her in front of two friends, showed them an intimate video, and repeatedly punched, kicked, and verbally abused her. He dragged her around the house and tore out clumps of her hair, leaving her bruised, bleeding, and terrified.

Despite attempts by his friends to intervene, the savage attack continued.

History of Control and Violence

The court revealed Chowdhury’s horrific pattern of coercion and violence that escalated after moving in with his victim in March 2024. He forced her into the bathroom and pinned her to the floor during arguments. On two occasions, he held her head underwater, once stating he “didn’t care” if he killed her.

  • Seized her phone and impersonated her to isolate her from friends
  • Demanded full control over her movements
  • Subjected her to constant humiliation and coercive control

Guilty Verdict and Sentence

In April 2025, Chowdhury was found guilty of two counts of intentional suffocation, controlling and coercive behaviour, and sharing intimate material to cause alarm. He also pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm and assault by beating.

On Thursday, 12 June, Judge Andrew Hurst sentenced him to five years and eight months in prison and slapped on an indefinite restraining order.

“You controlled her life to the point of misery,” said Judge Hurst. “You degraded her in front of others. You barred her from leaving her own home. The intentional suffocation offences show a highly dangerous attitude.”

Police Praise Victim’s Courage

Detective Constable Isobel Clegg said: “Chowdhury subjected the victim to repeated assaults. I want to praise her tremendous bravery in coming forward and supporting this investigation.”
