Teen Turns 18 by Joining Hate Mob, Gets Jail Time
Bobby Shirbon, a Hartlepool teen, marked his 18th birthday by taking part in far-right riots and attacking police. The violent scenes erupted over two nights, July 31 and August 1, after the tragic killing of three young girls in Southport.
Violence Fueled by Hate and Social Media
Shirbon was spotted throwing bottles, bricks, and wooden planks at officers and smashing windows during the chaos involving up to 300 people. When arrested, he shrugged it off saying, “It’s OK, everybody else is doing it.” Judge Francis Laird slammed his actions as “particularly troubling,” especially on a day meant to celebrate adulthood.
The court heard the riots were whipped up by far-right groups sharing asylum seekers’ addresses on social media, stoking racial hatred and violence.
Birthday Bash to Crime Spree
Defense lawyer Michael Cahill painted Shirbon as a vulnerable care leaver with no prior crime record. He spent the earlier part of his birthday quietly at a bingo hall with family before getting swept up by online posts inciting violence.
But prosecutor Rachel Master detailed how Shirbon actively joined the mayhem, smashing windows and hurling beer bottles at police vans while masked.
Government and Police Crackdown Underway
This sentencing is part of a wider crackdown after Britain’s recent wave of riots linked to the Southport stabbing case. Far-right thugs allegedly spread false info online, inflaming tensions. The accused killer, 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana, faces multiple murder and attempted murder charges.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has held emergency COBRA meetings as police and government toughen up. Social media firms face warnings to remove hateful content fast to curb more violence. Authorities vow to bring all rioters to justice and restore calm across the country.
