Masked Jewel Thieves Nabbed After Brazen Epping Heist

Just before 11.30am on Monday 27 September 2021, two men rocked up to a jewellery store on Epping High Street – wearing ultra-realistic full-face latex masks turning them into elderly gents. But it was anything but innocent.

Knife and Axe Threat as Staff Tied Up and Rolex Stolen

The pair forced their way inside by threatening staff. They dragged an employee into the office, tied them to a chair with cable ties, and ripped a pricey Rolex from their wrist. Armed with a knife and a hatchet axe, the duo ransacked the staff area before the alarm was raised and they sped off in a waiting car.

Police Nab Suspects with Mask and Weapon Stash

Weeks later, Operation Falcon officers stopped a vehicle in Canvey Island. Inside, driver George Murphy-Bristow had two full-face masks and clothes identical to the robbery disguises. A black duffel bag contained the very hatchet, knife, and cable ties used in the raid. Murphy-Bristow was arrested on the spot.

Forensic tests on saliva inside the masks linked DNA not only to George but also his older brother Benjamin Murphy. Both men were arrested separately in June last year but stayed tight-lipped during interviews.

Brothers Sent Down for Lengthy Jail Terms

Benjamin, 37, and George, 28, both from London N1, denied the charges when they first appeared at Southend-on-Sea Magistrates’ Court in June 2021. But after a three-day trial at Basildon Crown Court, a jury took just over an hour to find them guilty.

  • Benjamin Murphy was jailed for 18 years, convicted of robbery and two counts of possessing a bladed weapon.
  • George Murphy-Bristow received 13 years for robbery, possession of bladed articles, plus going equipped for theft.

Detective Inspector Yoni Adler from the Serious and Organised Crime Unit said: “Benjamin Murphy and his brother George Murphy-Bristow planned this robbery to use masks that would help them avoid detection. But it was forensic evidence combined with detailed detective work and proactive policing that linked them directly to the crime.

“I want to thank the store’s staff for supporting our investigation following an undoubtedly frightening incident, but I hope that they can now move on.”

The stolen Rolex, valued at £15,000, has never been found.
