Wakefield was shaken on Friday night, 14 March, after a major violent disturbance erupted on Kirkgate, prompting police to take swift action. Two men have now been charged in connection with the incident that triggered temporary stop-and-search powers throughout the city.

Mirko Bakir, 32, of Wakefield, and Harda Azeez, 31, from Royston, Barnsley, face serious charges related to the brawl. Both men are charged with Section 18 wounding with intent. Additionally, Azeez is accused of carrying an offensive weapon in a public place. The pair appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 17 March, and remain in custody.

Two other men, aged 21 and 23, who were arrested during the investigation, have since been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

The violent incident began just after 7pm and involved approximately 30 people reportedly armed with weapons. One victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

In response to the disorder, Wakefield police invoked Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. This measure allowed officers to stop and search any person or vehicle without the need for reasonable suspicion. The stop-and-search order came into effect at 11pm on Friday and lasted for 24 hours.

The order covered key locations including Kirkgate Train Station, Wakefield College, Pinderfields Hospital, and the Eastmoor estate. The police operation has now been stood down.

Following the incident, police have increased patrols across Wakefield city centre to reassure residents and help prevent further violence. A spokesperson from Wakefield District CID said, “This was a serious incident that caused concern across the community. We are grateful to those who have come forward with information so far and encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or captured footage to speak with us.”

Members of the public who saw anything or have footage related to the incident are urged to contact Wakefield CID via Live Chat on the West Yorkshire Police website or call 101, quoting crime reference 13250145886. Anonymous reports can also be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police have confirmed they will continue working closely with key community leaders and the Independent Advisory Group to ensure transparency regarding the use of these special powers in Wakefield.
