Two Sentenced for Murder of Lifeguard in Crawley Knife Attack

Harrison Tomkins, 25, was fatally stabbed in a brutal early-morning attack at an Arthur Road apartment complex last August. Despite rapid police and paramedic intervention, the Crawley lifeguard died from multiple stab wounds.

Conviction After Four-Week Trial

On February 9 at Chichester Crown Court, Kaydon Prior, 23, and Jason Curtis, 22, were found guilty of Harrison’s murder. Both men also faced charges of possessing an offensive weapon, with Prior additionally convicted of common assault.

The pair had travelled from London to Crawley after celebrating Curtis’ 22nd birthday in Chelsea. Upon learning Prior’s ex-girlfriend was at the apartment with Harrison, they sought her out. Surveillance footage showed Prior returning armed with a knife and a key to the flat, planning to attack Harrison while Curtis acted as lookout.

Violent Attack Caught on Camera

The fatal stabbing occurred around 5:30 am. Curtis was later found hiding in bushes nearby and claimed he had no knowledge of the murder. Both men were arrested, charged, and remain in custody with sentencing set for April 23.

Family Speaks Out After Verdict

“Harrison hasn’t got a voice today, so we will speak on behalf of him,” said the victim’s family. “He was innocent, taken by surprise, and killed as he lay in bed with no chance to defend himself.

“We were an amazing, loving family until that tragic day last August. Nothing justifies this senseless loss.”

Police Praise Family’s Bravery and Justice Achieved

Detective Police Constable Elliott Lander praised those involved:

“Harrison was killed in a frenzied attack that he had no chance to defend himself from. Prior and Curtis will now live with the consequences of their actions in prison.”

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Emma Vickers added:

“I commend Harrison’s family for their incredible bravery throughout this horrendous trial. Justice has been served, and our thoughts remain with them during this distressing time.”
