Workington Duo Jailed Over Brutal New Year’s Day Hammer Attack

Jamie Elston, 32, of Iredale Crescent, and David Ratcliffe, 33, of Falcon Place, both from Workington, have been handed hefty prison sentences after admitting their roles in a savage home invasion assault.

Long Sentences for Horrific Assault

Elston was locked up for 21 years and seven months. Ratcliffe was sentenced to 21 years behind bars. Both men face an additional five-year licence period on release, keeping them under close watch.

Victims Woken by Horror in Early Hours

The court heard that the attack happened just after midnight on New Year’s Day last year. The two victims were asleep when Elston and Ratcliffe broke into their home. Ratcliffe wielded a hammer, while Elston threatened: “We might as well kill them now.”

Ratcliffe went straight for one victim, punching and kicking them repeatedly in the head and face. Elston joined in, battering both victims mercilessly.

Devastating Injuries and Lasting Damage

  • One victim suffered traumatic brain injuries, requiring airlift to Royal Victoria Hospital and was placed in an induced coma.
  • The other sustained permanent vision loss in one eye, along with multiple facial injuries and a fractured nose.

Both were warned by the attackers not to contact the police.

Denials and Partial Admissions

In a police interview, Elston denied any involvement. Ratcliffe initially gave no comment, later admitting to punching one victim but denying use of the hammer or injuring the more seriously hurt victim. He claimed his memory was hazy due to alcohol.

Police Slam Attack as Life-Threatening

“This was a violent and sustained attack which has resulted in extremely serious, life-changing injuries,” said Detective Chief Inspector Hayley Wilkinson.

“One victim has permanent vision loss; another still remains in rehab. Their actions could have killed that night. The court’s sentence reflects the gravity of their crimes.”
