Teen Killers Convicted Over Brutal Park Attack on Beloved Pensioner
Two teenagers have been found guilty of manslaughter after savagely attacking 80-year-old Bhim Kohli while he walked his dog in Braunstone Town’s Franklin Park. The shocking verdict at Leicester Crown Court marks a grim end to a case that gripped the nation and sparked fierce debate about youth violence.
The Deadly Attack
On the evening of Sunday, 1 September 2024, Mr Kohli left his home on Bramble Way to walk his dog Rocky. CCTV captured five youths entering the park shortly after. Among them were the two teens who faced trial.
A 13-year-old girl falsely accused Mr Kohli of hitting another child—claims never proven. She pointed him out and filmed the attack. Moments later, a 15-year-old boy wearing a balaclava launched a brutal assault. Court footage showed him striking Mr Kohli’s face with a sandal, knocking the pensioner to the ground. The girl laughed as she recorded.
Mr Kohli was found by a passerby and rushed to hospital but died the next day from his injuries.
The Court Ruling
The jury at Leicester Crown Court found the 15-year-old boy guilty of manslaughter but cleared him of murder, suggesting no intent to kill. The 13-year-old girl was also convicted of manslaughter for inciting and filming the attack.
UK law hides their identities due to their ages. Sentencing is set for May 2025, with judges expected to balance punishment and rehabilitation.
Community Outcry and National Debate
The horrific assault has left Braunstone Town reeling. Tributes flooded in, calling Mr Kohli a “gentle soul” and “community pillar.” On social media, people expressed shock and heartbreak.
“How can kids this young be so cruel? Justice for Bhim Kohli,”
one user posted, while another asked,
“What’s happening to our youth?”
This case reignites fears over rising youth violence and the role of social media in fuelling aggression. A 2023 National Police Chiefs’ Council report revealed a spike in violent youth incidents, increasing pressure on authorities to act.
Officials Vow Action
Leicestershire Police described the attack as “heartbreaking” and called for community support to tackle youth crime. Local councillors want more park patrols and boosted youth services.
“We must ensure no family suffers like this again,”
said a council representative. Early intervention and community safety are now the top priorities.
A Bitter Reminder
While the verdict brings some closure, Mr Kohli’s tragic death is a stark warning about the dangers of unchecked aggression and false accusations. His family has asked for privacy during their grief.
As sentencing looms, this case stands as a powerful wake-up call about justice, responsibility, and the future of our communities.
