Drunken Duo Torture Beloved Parrot Sparky in Shocking Cruelty Case
Two Carlisle women have been found guilty of torturing and killing an African grey parrot while drunk, sparking outrage across the community. Nicola Bradley, 35, and Tracy Dixon, 47, faced court for causing “unnecessary suffering” to Sparky, the once-beloved feathered friend.
Horrific Abuse Unfolded in Owner’s Absence
The chilling ordeal happened on July 30 last year. After a heavy night out, Bradley and Dixon accepted a lift from Sparky’s owner, Paul Crooks, to his home. While Crooks stepped out, the women unleashed a terrifying rampage on Sparky. Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard they sprayed cleaning fluids and gloss paint over the parrot, then threw her into a tumble dryer for a short cycle.
Mr Crooks returned to a nightmarish scene — feathers scattered, Sparky in distress, her radiant plumage ruined. Testifying through tears, Crooks described Sparky as a cherished companion famed for mimicking the National Anthem and hits from Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Instead of a joyful singer, the bird was left a “wet, black mess.”
Denials, Blame Games, and a Damning Verdict
Bradley and Dixon initially denied any wrongdoing but finally confessed during police interviews and court testimony, each trying to blame the other. Lead magistrate Jennifer Wilkinson branded the abuse “sustained” and held both women accountable for Sparky’s suffering.
The pair were warned they face prison time for their cruel actions. Their sentencing is scheduled for August 22 at Carlisle Crown Court.
Community Outraged Over Sparky’s Tragic End
The parrot’s death has hit home for animal lovers and locals alike. Sparky wasn’t just a pet — she was a symbol of joy for Mr Crooks and his colleagues in the Army, entertaining worldwide contacts during online calls. Her senseless torment has left Carlisle demanding justice.
