Jealous boyfriend James Gold jailed for 16 months after four-hour brutal attack in front of children

Horrific four-hour attack ends with jail time

James Gold, 22, of Vanguard Close, Upminster, was locked up for 16 months at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 14 March. The young man pleaded guilty to strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) after unleashing a terrifying four-hour spree of violence on his partner.

The court heard Gold’s savage assault included punching, strangling, biting and degrading abuse — all witnessed by the woman’s young children. Victim suffered injuries all over her body.

Violent rampage sparked by jealousy and drugs

Prosecutor Helen Owen revealed the toxic relationship was peppered with constant violence. On 10 January, Gold arrived high on cannabis, dozed off on the sofa, then erupted in fury when confronted about secret messages he’d sent other women.

What followed was a nightmare unleashed over four hours, including:

  • Repeated punches and kicks
  • Fingers bent backwards
  • Strangulation nearly causing loss of consciousness
  • Biting to the arm
  • Spitting and verbal abuse
  • Cutting up clothes with a knife
  • Pouring shower gel around the home

Children forced to witness brutality

Recorder David Etherington KC condemned Gold’s “child-like” outburst as “completely unjustifiable”. The judge slammed the attack, especially the choking, calling it “absolutely forbidden territory.”

“It doesn’t take much force to cause death,” warned Recorder Etherington, recalling fatal strangulation cases.

He added:

“This incident was very serious. Four hours of uncontrollable rage. Nothing excuses cutting, spitting, grabbing, punching like a child.”

Sentencing and wider warning

Gold faces 16 months in prison, expected to serve half behind bars before release on licence. He had admitted the assault shortly after his arrest four days later.

The case highlights the urgent need for awareness of domestic abuse and coercive control, particularly where children suffer alongside victims.
