Tensions boiled over again outside the Bell Hotel in Epping on Sunday night (20 July) as anti-migrant protesters hurled bottles and smoke flares at police. This marks the second night of violent clashes outside the hotel, which currently houses asylum seekers and has sparked ongoing community unrest.
Violence Erupts as Police Struggle to Contain Crowds
Hundreds gathered near the Bell Hotel, chanting “Send them home” and “Defend our community.” Police in riot gear were once again deployed to manage the disorder, just as they were on Thursday. Officers faced a barrage of missiles and smoke bombs, forcing them to enforce a Section 60AA order to control the aggressive crowds.
On Thursday, one protester was arrested, with another held following Sunday’s disturbances. Police continue hunting suspects linked to the violence.
Community Divided Over Migrant Hotel and Protests
Local residents have mixed opinions on the unrest. One woman slammed the violence as “disgusting,” saying, “We have families here. This thuggish behavior isn’t protest—it’s intimidation.”
Another resident acknowledged the difficulties of having a migrant hotel nearby but warned, “It’s far worse to have violent mobs throwing things and laying siege to the area.”
Police Urge Public to Help Identify Troublemakers
Essex Police have appealed for any photos or videos of Sunday’s clashes. Witnesses are urged to report online at www.essex.police.uk or call 101, quoting reference EF100–EF102.
Authorities stressed that while peaceful protest remains legal, any threats to public safety will be dealt with swiftly and firmly.
