Burnley Cleaner Jailed for £11,000 Jewellery Heist
On November 17, police were called to a Burnley home after £11,000 worth of jewellery was reported stolen. The culprit? Darren Thorpe, a cleaner at the property.
Luxury Loot Includes Gucci and Gold Treasures
The stolen haul was impressive:
- Silver-coloured stainless steel Gucci watch
- Three 9 karat gold bracelets
- Gold pendant with sapphire and diamond (14 karat)
- 9 karat gold opal and sapphire ring
- Oblong Alexandrite pendant on 18 karat gold chain
- 18-inch Gucci gold chain
- 18-inch birdcage 14 karat gold chain
- Golden opal and diamond ring
Caught on CCTV, Thorpe Grabs 12-Month Jail Sentence
Police tracked Thorpe down after spotting him on CCTV at a local cash trader, where some of the stolen jewellery was recovered. The 54-year-old from Parklands View, Burnley, admitted handling stolen goods and theft in a dwelling at Burnley Crown Court earlier this year. Last week, he was sentenced to 12 months behind bars.
Victim Speaks Out: “They Took More Than Jewellery”
“Before November 17, 2022, I thought crime happened to others – not me,” the victim said. “But now I know the horror of being targeted.”
“It wasn’t just jewellery that was stolen – it was memories and priceless sentimental value. Those items reminded me of my loving late husband of 40 years.”
“Thorpe didn’t just take valuables; he took a part of my most treasured memories. It’s all I had left of him.”
“I feel sorry for those involved. It’s shameful, especially targeting an elderly woman who trusts people.”
“The crime affected me physically and mentally. I’ve had sleepless nights worrying if they’d threaten me or call. This isn’t about money, it’s the emotional pain.”
Police Speak Out Against “Callous” Theft
PC Fraz Usman said: “This was a callous crime against a vulnerable victim who trusted Thorpe. He betrayed that trust, causing obvious, long-lasting harm.”
“I’m glad Thorpe has been convicted and will face justice for his actions.”
Police Appeal for Help
Authorities ask anyone who spots the jewellery to contact them immediately. Pawn shop owners are urged to be especially vigilant for similar items sold since November 17.
