Drug Scare in Welwyn Garden City: Man Charged After Multiple Heroin Overdoses
Welwyn Garden City has been rocked by a string of suspected heroin overdoses. Police have arrested one man and charged him in connection with the shocking incidents.
Five Men Collapse After Suspected Heroin ODs
It all began just after 10pm on Thursday 19 August, when emergency services were called to an address on Peartree Lane. A man was found collapsed inside, suffering a suspected heroin overdose. While medics treated him, three more men fell ill at the same location. All four were rushed to hospital.
Just past midnight, a fifth man collapsed at a separate address on Knella Road. He, too, was treated for a suspected heroin overdose and taken to hospital. Thankfully, all five have now made full recoveries.
Police Nab 21-Year-Old with Drugs Intent
Cheguevar Mitchell Dacres, 21, from Lewisham, was charged with possession of heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply. He’s been remanded in custody and is awaiting trial.
A 33-year-old woman from Welwyn Garden City was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply but has since been released under investigation as enquiries continue.
Warning from Police Amid National Overdose Spike
“Across England, there has been a recent rise in the number of suspected drug overdoses,” said Detective Inspector Adam Bridges from the Welwyn Hatfield Local Crime Unit.
“While there is no evidence linking these Welwyn Garden City cases to others around the country, I urge anyone using drugs, especially heroin, to be extra cautious about what and how much they are taking.
“Hertfordshire Constabulary is working closely with Public Health England, the National Police Chiefs’ Council, and the National Crime Agency on the national investigation. If you have any information, please come forward.”
